Wt and license (GPL for commercial?) and other questions
Added by Obelix Stone about 7 years ago
1. Is WT good for small websites?
2. I have idea, use WT as website where I'll have product (not created with WT) and user can buy it, create account and maybe forum. I discover this topic and if I understand, I don't need commercial license, if I am creating website or webapp which are not instaled? If yes, to be sure, my website will be on some web hosting site, it is ok? No need to release source code?
3. If I understand WT idea, I can create page with HTML/CSS and under C I create interaction. But what about the browser compatibility, for HTML/CSS it is on WT side or it is my responsible to do make it compatibile? (I mean, when I create HTML/CSS pages, I sometimes for have same look on all browsers, need to add some special code to display it right.)

Of course :)

The requirement to pass on the source code of the website is linked to the distribution of the code. With a GPL license, running the site on your own computers does not require you to distribute the source code to the users of your application. This is one of the key differences between GPL and AGPL; Wt uses GPL.

It is correct that Wt does not modify the markup you write or the CSS files you provide. It is your responsibility to ensure that the features you use are supported on the browsers that you target.

Wim.

Ok I understand, but when I buy some hosting on bluehost.com (for example) and host my site created with WT, I need distribute the source? (when I use GPL version) Because theoretically, I bought the storage on some server, which can act as "my computer". I am asking for sure.It is correct that Wt does not modify the markup you write or the CSS files you provide. That means, If I don't write site in HTML/CSS but I will use C only, WT take care of that HTML/CSS correction for browsers?

I try to avoid to give my own interpretation to the GPL, but I think that indeed when you put GPL licensed software on a (virtual) computer you pay for to have exclusive access to (e.g. a leased desktop computer or a rented cloud VPS), it will generally not be interpreted as distribution of the software.

It's hard to write a web application without HTML or CSS, but the HTML and CSS that ships with Wt contains the necessary provisions to work on most browsers.

Wim.
